(Photo by Mark Thompson/Getty Images)As one of the most publicised, high profile races of the year, the Epsom Derby attracts millions of punters from around the world looking to take advantage of the Epsom Derby betting markets. Many of the people betting on the Epsom Derby do not bet on other racing events, and swell the markets with dead money available to punters who follow some basic betting guidelines.

Epsom Derby Betting Tips

  • Back colts: With the last filly winning the Epsom Derby in 1916, it makes no sense to back a filly at the Epsom Derby even if the horse has performed well at the 1,000 Guineas. Fillies arent always priced at the highest odds either, as was the case with Cape Verdi in 1988 who ran and lost the race as outright favourite.
  • Keep an eye on short odds horses: With rare exceptions short-odds horses tend to perform well at the Epsom Derby. In the last 7 years no Epsom Derby winner has been priced over 7/1. Favourites have recently put in strong performances in the race coming in first in three races since the turn of the millennium.
  • Back Kieren Fallon and Johnny Murtagh: These two top flat racing jockeys account for account for six of the wins in the Epsom Derby since 1999. Also look out for partnerships with Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan OBrien as these two top trainers have set the pace in the Epsom Derby in recent years.
  • Follow the trial races: Several big races take place prior to the Epsom Derby featuring thoroughbreds who will perform at the important classic. Races to look out for include the Chester Dee Stakes, the Lingfield Derby Trial and the York Dante Stakes. Many punters pay close attention to the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket however this race is run over a different length to the Derby and the course in Newmarket bears little resemblance to the Epsom Downs turf.
  • Back a specialist: It pays to have a close look at the statistics of the runners in the Epsom Derby as the 1 mile 4 furlong distance run requires a combination of stamina and experience that may be lacking in sprinters or milers with good records. Look out for horses that have achieved over distance greater and a mile and a half before doing your Epsom Derby betting.
